This three-day (24-hour) training equips renovators and contractors with the knowledge and tools needed to guide homeowners in making effective retrofit decisions. Participants will learn how to evaluate a home to identify the most impactful retrofit opportunities, design retrofit solutions that maximize energy savings, comfort, and durability, and ensure that the execution phase is both practical and effective. Given the increasing challenges of housing affordability, this course emphasizes strategies that help renovators and homeowners achieve the greatest long-term value from their retrofit investments.

Funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program.

By the end of this course, participants will:

  • Evaluate homes for retrofit opportunities and prioritize improvements.
  • Design cost-effective and high-performance retrofit solutions.
  • Plan and sequence retrofit projects efficiently.
  • Oversee construction execution with quality assurance.
  • Optimize investment value and return to retrofit.
  • Communicate effectively with homeowners regarding retrofit options.
  • Apply emerging technologies and best practices for durable, energy-efficient, sustainable retrofits.

This training provides participants with foundational knowledge and shop-based practice to identify code-compliant materials, calculate effective thermal resistance values, and safely install insulation and barrier systems. These skills enable them to reduce heat loss, air leakage, and moisture intrusion in both new builds and retrofit projects. By assessing existing assemblies and implementing targeted upgrades, they help lower energy consumption and contribute to low-carbon building practices.
