The Electric Vehicle Technology and Service course prepares Automotive Service Technicians (AST) to safely diagnose, service, and repair high-voltage electric vehicles. The course is designed for AST Red Seal Technicians or AST 3rd—or 4th-year apprentices to build upon their previous knowledge of conventional vehicle systems and further develop their knowledge and skills required to work confidently on most electric vehicles on our roads.

Prerequisite(s) – Automotive Service Technician Red Seal Endorsement or SkilledTradesBC CofQ Level 3 or equivalent.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Apply high-voltage safety procedures
  • Distinguish different categories of high-voltage vehicles
  • Service High Voltage Powertrain Systems
  • Service high voltage battery charging systems
  • Compare high-voltage vehicle transmission type
  • Service high voltage vehicle temperature management systems
  • Distinguish the maintenance procedures for high-voltage vehicles
  • Associate causes for common symptoms found in current high-voltage vehicles

The course comprises a 6-hour online self-paced safety module that must be completed before an intensive 30-hour classroom/shop training period.

Advanced Technical Skills: Participants gain the expertise needed to service and repair EVs effectively, ensuring these vehicles remain operational and efficient. This directly supports the increased adoption and reliance on EVs, essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Extended Vehicle Lifespan: Proper maintenance and repair contribute to the longevity and reliability of EVs, promoting their widespread use and reducing the need for fossil-fuel-powered vehicles.
