In this 60-hour online course, Measurement, Monitoring & Verification (MMV), you’ll explore key topics in the growing field of carbon sequestration. You will study the characteristics and properties of CO2 and how they affect long-term storage, and the regulations, approaches, and technologies used. The course also covers site planning, modeling, monitoring, and data analytics for effective verification. Designed for professionals experienced in subsurface and reservoir modeling, geoscience, well planning, data analytics, and regulatory reporting, this instructor-guided course offers practical knowledge and insights for immediate application. Complete the prerequisite Introduction to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and this course to earn SAIT’s Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Certificate of Completion. Receive a SAITMicro digital badge if you meet the specified earning criteria for this micro-credential.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the fundamental characteristics and properties of CO2 and implications for long-term underground carbon sequestration
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the regulations, principles and objectives associated with monitoring, measuring and verifying sequestered carbon emissions
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the dimensions required for carbon sequestration project and site-specific MMV plans including monitoring techniques to track the behaviour of injected CO2 and demonstrate containment
  • Describe the different approaches and technologies used for monitoring and measuring atmospheric, biospheric, hydrosphere and geospheric conditions around underground carbon storage sites
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of modelling to predict the performance of injected carbon behaviour
  • Describe how to conduct data analytics to verify that CO2 sequestration sites are conforming to regulatory permits
  • Describe emissions accounting and reporting requirements

You will demonstrate your skill and knowledge acquisition unit quizzes and written assignments. This online course is structured and guided. All coursework must be completed as per the course schedule and no later than the course end date.

This course qualifies for the SAITMicro badge. Students who successfully complete this course with a final grade of A- (80%) or higher will earn a microcredential and receive a shareable digital badge.

This course prepares you for Canada’s low-carbon workforce by mastering CO2 characteristics and their role in long-term underground sequestration. You’ll gain a thorough understanding of regulations for monitoring, measuring, and verifying sequestered carbon, allowing you to develop site-specific MMV plans. By learning different monitoring technologies, you’ll track CO2 behaviour and ensure containment. Your expertise in modelling will help predict carbon performance, while your data analytics skills will ensure compliance with regulatory permits and emissions reporting. This comprehensive knowledge positions you as a valuable contributor to Canada’s carbon management strategies and the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
