As self-sufficient energy systems, microgrids are pivotal to a resilient and sustainable energy future. Microgrids: The Technical Aspect provides an in-depth exploration of critical components, operating principles, and design considerations essential for successful microgrid implementation. By the end of the course, you will gain a profound understanding of the various technical aspects that make microgrids a cornerstone of modern energy solutions. 

Learners should have a good understanding of electric generation, transmission, power systems analysis, microgrid operation, and renewable energy.  

The learner will learn to:

  • Classify various microgrid assets, identify their key attributes, and understand the needs for the right asset mix
  • Understand asset operating behaviours such as asset reaction times, number of start/stop functions, load behaviour, process behaviour, resiliency requirements, ramp up/down times, temperature impact, and start up requirements
  • Describe the asset maturity landscape, adoption curves, correlations with conventional solutions, opportunity cost assessment, financial analysis, and multi-faceted use case benefit extraction
  • Select assets based on input requirements and availability including asset sizing assessment as it relates to the overall solution
  • Summarize various input requirements such a load profiles based on specific load types, fuel sources and accessibility, renewable variability/intermittency (weather patterns), market rates, utility pricing and models (Time of Use, Fixed Fee, Time Varying Rates), load operating behaviour, and generation dispatch 

Microgrids integrate generation systems such as solar photovoltaic and wind. Microgrids work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, provide higher reliability for critical loads, and supply electricity in areas not served by existing infrastructure. The training supports C2R2’s ability to impact and lead training deployment by offering microcredentials to Canadians interested in lowering greenhouse gases and increasing the reliability of electricity infrastructure by developing microgrids. The microcredential supports Canada’s Climate Action Plan –embracing the power of nature to tackle climate change. It also supports Canada’s 2030 Emission Reduction Plan by offering training that diversifies energy sources, produces clean energy, and connects regions to clean power.
