This two-day course equips window installers and related trades with the knowledge and skills to deliver high-performance installations. Through classroom instruction, live demonstrations and hands-on experience, participants learn how to select windows and apply proven installation methods for low-rise, wood frame construction. White the course primary focuses on new construction; it also addresses the challenges of window replacement in older homes.

Funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program.

By the end of this course, participants will:

  • Select windows that balances cost, performance, and durability for a cold climate.
  • Interpret code requirements, installation standards, and manufacturer instructions that underpin quality window installations.
  • Install windows reliably using proven best practices for flashing, air/water sealing, shimming, and fastening.
  • Tailor installation techniques to local exposure and environmental conditions.
  • Identify, prevent, and correct installation errors that compromise building envelope performance, occupant comfort, and safety.

This training equips installers with the skills to integrate high-performance windows into building envelopes using proven building science principles. Participants learn to apply thermal, air, vapour, and water control strategies that enhance thermal performance, control solar gain, and minimize condensation—key factors in reducing energy use and improving occupant comfort. The course emphasizes proper installation techniques for walls with various types of sheathing and/or continuous exterior insulation, drainage strategies, claddings and trim, ensuring that windows contribute to overall envelope integrity and long-term durability. By aligning with national energy codes and performance metrics such as R-value, U-factor, and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, the training helps ensure that window installations meet or exceed energy efficiency targets, supporting Canada’s broader goals for sustainable construction and carbon reduction.
