Training Description

In this 40-hour online course, Carbon Sequestration / Underground Storageyou will explore the fundamental characteristics and properties of CO2 and implications for underground sequestration, regulations, tools and techniques and long-term storage strategy. This instructor-guided course is ideal for professionals with experience characterizing and evaluating subsurface geology including geoscientists, engineers and technologistsComplete the prerequisite Introduction to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and this course to earn SAIT’s Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Certificate of Completion. Receive a SAITMicro digital badge if you meet the specified earning criteria for this microcredential.

Language

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Detail the fundamental characteristics and properties of CO2 and implications for safe and secure underground sequestration
  • Describe current and emerging regulations that impact COunderground sequestration
  • Demonstrate an understanding of tools and techniques utilized to assess capacity, injectivity and containment of COunderground and how to use them
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the components of a long-term CO storage strategy that includes zone selection and design, drilling plan and wellbore design and injection and well testing

You will demonstrate your skill and knowledge acquisition through unit quizzes and written assignments. This online course is structured and guided. All coursework must be completed as per the course schedule and no later than the course end date.

This course qualifies for the SAITMicro badge. Students who successfully complete this course with a final grade of A- (80%) or higher will earn a microcredential and receive a shareable digital badge.

This course prepares you for Canada’s low-carbon workforce by mastering CO2 characteristics and their role in safe underground sequestration. You will learn about current and emerging regulations to ensure compliance and safety in CO2 storage projects. Additionally, you’ll gain skills in using tools to assess underground capacity, injectivity, and containment, enabling effective evaluation of sequestration strategies. Your understanding of long-term CO2 storage components such as zone selection, drilling plans, wellbore design, and injection testing will equip you to design and manage projects that support Canada’s carbon management goals and contribute to climate change mitigation.
