In this 45-hour online course, Technology in Mass Timber Design and Construction, you’ll explore mass timber design and construction principles, including biophilic design, industrialized construction methods, and Building Information Modeling (BIM). Learn to analyze designs, estimate material costs, and manage project stages and team dynamics for successful outcomes. This course is ideal for professionals in architecture, engineering, design, BIM, cost estimating, or project management, equipping you to integrate modular and prefabricated elements into sustainable designs. Complete this course and prerequisite courses—Mass Timber Products and Systems and Sustainable Mass Timber Construction—to earn SAIT’s Sustainable Mass Timber Construction and Design Certificate of Completion. Receive a SAITMicro digital badge if you meet the earning criteria for this microcredential.

Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Demonstrate biophilic design principles in relation to mass timber construction
  • Identify the key advantages in industrialized construction using volumetric, modular and panel prefabricated components
  • Recall building types using the National Building Code of Canada
  • Identify the members of a mass timber project team and describe the scope of each
  • Explain how BIM technology can be used in mass timber project management and construction
  • Analyze a preliminary mass timber design
  • Estimate the cost of mass timber building materials

You’ll demonstrate your skills and knowledge acquisition through discussion board activities/posts and assignments. This online course is structured and guided. All coursework must be completed as per the course schedule and no later than the course end date.

This course equips you with practical tools and insights to apply innovative approaches like biophilic design, modular construction, and BIM technology, meeting the demand for sustainable, efficient building practices in Canada’s evolving construction industry. You’ll gain the skills to tackle real-world challenges, enhance collaboration, and deliver projects that align with sustainability goals.
