Training Description

Deep Energy Retrofit Planning is an advanced SAIT Micro-credential course focused on developing detailed, client-focused plans for residential deep energy retrofit projects. Participants explore the planning considerations, decision-making processes, and collaborative approaches used to support successful retrofit outcomes. Topics include home performance evaluation, building envelope and mechanical system upgrades, performance modelling, cost considerations, homeowner priorities, and multi-stage retrofit strategies.

Designed for professionals working in residential construction, renovation, design, or related fields, this training is ideal for those preparing to lead or coordinate retrofit projects or strengthen their retrofit planning capabilities. Prior knowledge of building science fundamentals and residential retrofit concepts, along with relevant industry experience, is strongly recommended.

By the end of this training, learners will be able to:

  • Engage appropriate professionals to capture required information from an existing home to inform the detailed planning for a deep energy retrofit (DER).
  • Utilize appropriate products and systems to prepare a detailed plan for retrofitting residential wall assemblies (including windows / doors).
  • Utilize appropriate products and systems to prepare a detailed plan for retrofitting residential foundation assemblies.
  • Utilize appropriate products and systems to prepare a detailed plan for retrofitting residential roof and attic assemblies.
  • Utilize appropriate technologies and products to prepare a detailed plan for retrofitting residential mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Iterate between design, performance modelling, homeowner priorities and cost to optimize and finalize a DER plan.

Deep energy retrofit planning is a critical step in improving the energy performance of existing homes and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Effective retrofit plans help ensure that building envelope upgrades, mechanical system improvements, electrification measures, and other energy-saving strategies work together to achieve long-term performance goals.

This advanced SAIT Micro-credential course prepares participants to support residential deep energy retrofit projects by developing the planning expertise needed to evaluate options, coordinate technical input, and integrate performance, cost, and homeowner considerations into a comprehensive retrofit approach. As Canada works toward a more sustainable, low-carbon future, training that supports high-performance residential retrofits helps build the workforce capacity needed to improve existing housing stock and support building decarbonization efforts.
