In this 40-hour online course, Carbon Transportation, you will explore the fundamental characteristics and properties of CO2, technical aspects, and various means of transportation. You will also learn about the implications, benefits, limitations, and regulations associated with the transportation of CO2. This instructor-guided course is ideal for professionals experienced in operating or maintaining gaseous and liquid fuel pipelines. Anyone seeking to understand better the transportation of CO2 and its implications for Canada to meet netzero goals will also benefit. Complete the prerequisite Introduction to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and this course to earn SAIT’s Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Certificate of Completion. Receive a SAITMicro digital badge if you meet the specified earning criteria for this microcredential.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the fundamental characteristics and properties of CO2 including compression and hydraulics, and implications for CO2 transportation
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the technical readiness, benefits, and limitations of CO2 transportation
  • Outline current and emerging regulations and standards that impact CO2 transportation
  • Explain the characteristics of carbon gas and compression as it relates to truck and pipeline transportation
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to apply knowledge of the transportation of liquid CO2 to the selection, operation, and maintenance of appropriate transportation methods
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how the unique characteristics of supercritical CO2 informs considerations required for pipeline construction, operations, and maintenance

You will demonstrate your skills and knowledge acquisition through unit quizzes and written assignments. This online course is structured and guided. All coursework must be completed as per the course schedule and no later than the course end date.

This course equips you for Canada’s low-carbon workforce by mastering CO2 characteristics, compression, and hydraulics essential for effective transportation. You will gain insights into the technical readiness, benefits, and limitations of CO2 transportation methods, enabling informed decision-making. By understanding current and emerging regulations, you will ensure compliance and safety in operations. Your knowledge of carbon gas and compression will guide the selection, operation, and maintenance of transportation methods for trucks and pipelines. Additionally, your understanding of supercritical CO2 will inform key considerations for pipeline construction, operations, and maintenance, positioning you as a valuable asset in supporting CO2 transportation in Canada’s low-carbon economy.
